  1. Premiere: James Zimmerman, clarinet; International Clarinet Association (ICA) string quartet, 2019 in Knoxville. 1st place in ICA composition competition.

Haze 1 is a depiction of a typical summer’s day in sun-baked Australia. It is a scorching stifling day. All creatures of water, bush and sky are still, awaiting the coolness of sunset. All except one – the cicada. His relentless tune defies stillness and is stillness. His metronomic song drips from gum trees. His symphony of survival deafens our senses. A late afternoon storm brings a welcome yet all-too-brief respite. Dusk arrives and with it the bush pulsates once again.

Haze 1 is in one continuous movement based on a movement from the composer’s earlier chamber work An Australian Backyard Suite for voice, clarinet, cello and piano.
